The Second Amendment

My views on the Second Amendment of the Constitution are as follows. The Second Amendment clearly states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Therefore, it is the law of our land that we the people of the United States have the right to keep and bear arms.

There are many pragmatic reasons why the founding fathers gave us this right, but my favorite reason is: "We want the good guys to out arm the bad guys!" Most gun laws or regulations have the opposite effect, insomuch as the bad guys will always find a way to have a gun via the black-market, while the good guys have a harder time getting a gun.

Clearly there will be a line that should not be crossed as to what we as private citizens can own. (We all cannot own a nuclear bomb.) I do not support arbitrary definitions for guns, such as outlawing a gun because it has a handle or carries X amount of bullets by naming it an assault weapon. The line needs to be reasonable when it relates to our freedom to own guns, because as mentioned before, we are guaranteed the right in the Constitution.

I do not have a problem with violent criminals being prohibited from owning guns if they have been convicted. I do not have a problem with an instant background check when purchasing a gun as long as there is no record kept of the purchaser, and there is a clause that allows private sellers to be excluded so as not to hurt gun shows.

I do not believe that forcing reciprocity for concealed carry for all the states would be a good idea. I do not support this because if the federal government can do this, it can also take away our freedom to carry a concealed weapon. I think a better idea would be a national concealed carry permit. This way if the federal government were controlled by anti-gun politicians and tried to change the national concealed carry permit, we would still have the states protecting concealed carry for their own states.

I will fight for our freedoms in Congress! Ruth
