Ideas on Healthcare reform from a conservative point of view

Healthcare needs reforming, but government run healthcare is not the solution. Government run medical care will add more debt and bureaucracy to our system. The costs will result in high taxes, failed businesses, less medical research and rationing of resources. Government run healthcare will become a mixture of the paperwork we do during tax season and the lines we have at the DMV. This is not the solution we want.

About 18 percent of the people in CD#7 are not presently covered under health insurance. I would like to change this by making it economically feasible for more people to have their own personal healthcare insurance. I have been studying some solutions to the healthcare problem, and here are some ideas which I believe would help people to possess their own healthcare plan:

  • Change the tax laws so that individuals have the same tax benefits for a health insurance deduction as companies do now.
  • Repeal the government mandates regarding what insurance companies must cover.
  • Enact tort reform to prevent frivolous law suits.
  • Make healthcare costs easier to understand so that people know what they are paying for and can do comparative shopping.
  • Encourage more tax deductions for charitable healthcare.
  • Encourage high deductible health insurance and tax deductible health savings accounts.
  • Allow people to buy insurance across state lines, just like they can for car and life insurance.
  • Encourage research and techologies through free market enterpise.
  • Give incentives for young doctors to serve in disadvantaged areas.

Healthcare reform needs to be on-going. It cannot be a one-size-fits-all program because needs change, society changes, and hopefully medicine will continue to improve.
